This morning we started our day with breakfast at a coffee shop Michelle recommended that was by the beautiful Forsyth Park. Although we probably weren't technically cool enough to eat there since it was really very cool, it was really good and not fried, which being here has made me realize is something I greatly value on occasion.
After breakfast, we headed out to Bonaventure Cemetery. This is a really beautiful and historic cemetery on the grounds of a former mansion. It has a lot of sculptures and stories there as well as Spanish moss, which makes it look pretty spooky. We got a guided tour and it enhanced our visit so much. I had not yet finished Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil since I didn't have any time to read until we got to Hilton Head and I really wished I had. Savannah is a main character in the book and the cemetery is also heavily featured so I think it would have enhanced our visit even more. It was definitely well worth the time it took to view.
After our tour, we headed back into town and ate at Zunzi's, a sandwich shop that has South African, Swiss, Italian, and Dutch influences. It's reputation for greatness is well-deserved and we both loved our lunch. We followed this up with Savannah's famous Leopold's ice cream which was also very good.
We strongly considered taking one final tour: a historic home tour of the Owens-Thomas house. However in the end we decided against it because it is pricey by itself and most people say it's only worth it if you buy the triple attraction pass, but we didn't have time to see the other attractions. We also really weren't sure about another group tour or spending 45 minutes on it. If we go back to Savannah or had another day, we would do it. We started our relatively short drive to Hilton Head and checked into our hotel.
This is the view from our room. I knew the downside of going to Savannah first was that we would be exhausted by the time we got here and I was right. However, this afternoon we got some time to read and relax and I am really looking forward to the next two days where we have very little planned.
