Vacation Day 1: La Jolla

Today was our first day of vacation. We took a very early flight to LA and the plan was to connect there to San Diego. However, we somehow missed our plane. I have no idea what happened. It was like we were momentarily first-time-flyers or something. Maybe it was sub-conscious because we hadn't previously realized how close San Diego was to LA and were deeply regretting not driving because we love road tripping and we haven't driven much in California. So once we wasted a couple hours in the airport before we realized what happened, we rented a car and drove down from LA, which was a lot of fun. We did have to drive to the San Diego airport to get our luggage, but otherwise no big deal. Once we got our luggage, we went to La Jolla. There we went to Birch Aquarium and also the children's pool beach, which is famous for its seals, but surprisingly not for its children (click the link to see fun details, such as the "seal excrement overload"). We had planned an outdoor dinner overlooking the beach at sunset, but we ended up switching it up because it was cold and foggy. We ate indoors with what would have been an awesome ocean view if not for the fog. Luckily the food was outstanding, so that was a consolation. After dinner, we walked around La Jolla, which is a very cute town, and had dessert at a gourmet ice cream bar place. I decided I wanted to live in La Jolla until I researched prices and saw that shacks go for almost a million dollars and a reasonable house but nothing special is about 6 million. Guess we'll stick with Olathe.

This is Jason experiencing the hands-on "tide pools" at the aquarium.
Me in front of the aquarium. And as close to a whale as I ever get. It is never whale season anywhere at the time we are there.

A seal swimming ashore at the children's pool. This is a baby. There were a lot of moms and babies and the babies were much much cuter than the adults.

  1. Sounds fun! Sam and I would love to live in San Diego, but like you, decided we didn't want to live in poverty, so we'll stick with good ol' Birmingham. :)
